4. Alley wrote a twinned episodic memoir, the first volume being Yo Banfa! In the sequel, The People Have Strength (Peking, ), Alley wrote passionately of the evil days of a colonized Shanghai (as a British treaty port/canton) and about the haughty bronze lions looking down from the main doors of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, the Yokohama Specie Bank, and the . He devoted 60 years to setting up schools and thousands of industrial co-operatives there. He wrote of them “fitting into the vast landscape of rural China”. His slogan was: “Yo Banfa!” – “There is a way.” He retained independent views in a country where such attitudes were suspect – and still are. His mana was unquestioned.
His book Yo Banfa! is fascinating in its cheerful optimism that China was just about to overturn everything and build some kind of utopia - which seems to have been a pretty common attitude in the early 50s. I would've loved to have heard his stories of 60 years in China - in freer times than when you met him, naturally. 南遊記: 外三種; Di 1 ban. 第1版. - Shanghai: Shanghai gu ji chu ban she, 上海: 上海古籍出版社, Description Book — 22, pages ; 24 cm.
